Seeing with the Mind’s Eye: Psychologically Charged Exhibition at Tower
Hedwige Jacobs and Alexis Granwell, January 3 – February 10, 2007
December 18, 2006 (Philadelphia, PA) – Tower Gallery, Philadelphia’s newest gallery of contemporary art in Northern Liberties, features the work of Alexis Granwell and Hedwige Jacobs from January 3, 2007 – February 10, 2007. Both artists draw on the unfolding nature of meaning and the complex psychological processes involved in creating and interpreting works of art.
The ever-popular Hedwige Jacobs exhibits a new series of drawings entitled, “Second Impression,” in which the artist shares her interest in the open-ended and ongoing nature of meaning. The minimalist drawings, replete with symbolism, typify the artist’s fascination with layering and visual illusion. The artist also includes an animated version of one of her drawings in the show. Jacobs, who has an M.F.A. from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, was recently included in New American Paintings.
In the upper gallery, Alexis Granwell presents, “Navigating the Ecstasy,” a collection of monotypes, etchings, and drawings on paper that explore psychological interconnectedness. The work – mostly in black and white – references cellular growth, topography, and mental processes. Her large installation piece, from which the show draws its name, is an explosive celebration of sensuality in foam, wood, fabric, and wire. The artist uses pattern, repetition, and line to create landscapes about the breakdown of the ego and the discovery of true self.
The gallery will host an opening reception with live music and refreshments on Friday, January 5 from 5 – 8 pm with an artist’s talk at 6:30 pm.
Tower Gallery is located at 969 N. 2nd Street in Philadelphia, PA. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11 am to 5:30 pm and on Saturday, 11 am to 4 pm. For additional information, please contact Tower Gallery at 215.253.9874.
